Speech Sound Variability Research Group

In collaboration with the University of Cologne, the Speech Sound Variability Research Group investigates the articulatory and acoustic variability of speech sounds across different speech modes, speaking styles, and phonetic contexts. So far, the group’s research has primarily focused on the variability of vowels and examined both within- and outside-speech-stream determinants of this variability.
The collaboration is led on the Hungarian side by Andrea Deme (formerly led by Alexandra Markó), and on the German side by Prof. Dr. Reinhold Greisbach (University of Cologne).
The research has been supported multiple times by mobility cooperation projects of TKA (Tempus Public Foundation, Hungary) and DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service, Germany).
Current Project:
2023–2024: Phonetic aspects of fast speech in Hungarian and German
(Lead researchers: Andrea Deme, Reinhold Greisbach)
Previous Projects:
2020–2021: A cross-linguistic articulatory and acoustic analysis of the effect of vowel space density on the variability of vowels
(Lead researchers: Andrea Deme, Reinhold Greisbach)
2014–2016: Articulatory and acoustic analysis of high-pitched sung vowels in Hungarian and German using electromagnetic articulography, ultrasound, and inverse filtering of the acoustic signal
(Lead researchers: Alexandra Markó, Reinhold Greisbach)
